Earthquake Safety Tips: Protect Yourself and Others!

Attention, everyone! Earthquakes can occur at any time and in any location. A recent earthquake took place near the South Coast of Myanmar, with coordinates 15.266°N, 96.248°E. It had a magnitude of 6.0 and originated at a depth of 10 km. The epicenter was approximately 289 km southwest of Phop Phra District, Tak Province, Thailand.

It is important to know how to ensure your safety during and after a seismic event. Here are some essential guidelines:

Indoor Safety: When indoors, follow the “DROP, COVER, AND HOLD ON!” protocol. Seek shelter under a sturdy piece of furniture or against an inside wall. Avoid windows, doors, and elevators. If you are in bed, protect yourself by holding on and staying put with a pillow over your head. Wait until the shaking stops and it is confirmed safe before leaving the building.

Outdoor Safety: If you are outside during an earthquake, move to an open area away from buildings, trees, and power lines. Drop to the ground and remain there until the shaking subsides. Stay away from hazards such as overpasses, underpasses, and bridges. Be cautious of falling debris and overhead power lines. If you are in a vehicle, slow down, drive to a clear area, turn on your emergency flashers, and stay inside until the shaking stops.

Pet Safety: During an earthquake, our pets may become frightened. Do not attempt to hold them. Allow them to find a safe place to hide. Secure dogs with a leash in a fenced yard. Create an emergency pen at home with a three-day supply of dry food and water. If you need to leave your pet behind, provide fresh water and leave a note with your whereabouts.

Immediate Actions: Following an earthquake, anticipate aftershocks and remember to “DROP, COVER, AND HOLD ON!” Check yourself and others for injuries, wear appropriate clothing and gear, and stay informed by listening to a battery-operated radio or TV for emergency updates. Offer first aid assistance to those in need, but avoid moving seriously injured individuals unless they are in immediate danger.

Let’s raise awareness and prioritize safety together! Share these tips with your loved ones and remember to stay prepared and composed during earthquakes. Knowledge saves lives!
